Begin To Feel Better

You Made It Through Rehab, Now What?

It is not uncommon for those just released from an addiction treatment program to conclude that their problems are over. You made it through treatment, however the road ahead is paved with uncertainty. You will hear from professionals about the importance of step-down care which is intended to reinforce newly-learned coping skills and self-soothing strategies. This is an important aspect of your care after your rehab to ensure and support your goal of maintaining a healthy life of sober living or harm-reduction.

Recovery Support & Aftercare

Kim Seelbrede works with individuals just released from addiction or eating disorder inpatient rehab and provides support in the form of individual psychotherapy, group therapy, and when helpful, family therapy. This gives the person in recovery the opportunity to continue learning and practicing new skills and coping mechanisms. Additionally, clients can begin to work on underlying trauma, anxiety, depression, or other co-occurring difficulties that have contributed to their eating disorder symptoms, use of substances, or reliance on addictive behaviors. They can learn and practice more helpful behaviors in their recovery life as well as develop self-care routines to nourish the mind and body. Other important goals include helping clients create a "life worth living" and develop healthier relationships with themselves and others, as an alternative to dependence, troublesome behaviors or dangerous drugs, alcohol, and behavioral addictions.

As a professionally trained addiction and eating disorder psychotherapist, Kim Seelbrede helps clients navigate the challenges they face post-rehab and at any phase of recovery. It is not uncommon for those just released from an addiction treatment program to conclude that their problems are over. You made it through treatment, however the road ahead is paved with uncertainty. You will hear from professionals about the importance of good step-down or aftercare to reinforce newly learned coping skills and self-soothing strategies to maintain a healthy life of sober living or harm-reduction. Immediately upon release, aftercare may require a period of extra support such as several times weekly counseling sessions to reinforce new skills, support groups such as AA, Rational Recovery, or SMART Recovery, booster sessions, and sessions to support family members. Recovery coaching can help individuals identify, manage, and remove the many environmental and personal obstacles that interfere with successful recovery. Because it's hard to do it alone, how does a recovery coach help?

Help and guidance for family members...

Getting a loved one into treatment and finding the right program requires help, support, and resources. It's difficult to do this alone. Additionally, family members experience terror and trauma related to the experience of having a family member who is addicted and at risk. The last thing on one's mind is self-care, but this is the most important thing that you must do for yourself. Asking for help and support for yourself is not only wise, but will help you feel less alone, help you stay focused, help you feel better, and ultimately enable you to remain strong through the process.

Recovery support can help clients with the following:

  • maintaining motivation and staying focused on personal goals

  • support for creating healthy and safe boundaries for self and others

  • support for maintaining the energy, passion, and desire for healthy relationships

  • help for engaging in activities and relationships that replace the desire to use drugs or engage in harmful behaviors

  • self-empowerment and learning to ask for help as needed

  • identifying needs and learning to connect to inner guidance

  • creating self-care practices that nourish mind and body

  • support in identifying and managing cravings and triggers

  • learning to "own" actions and take responsibility in relationships and with behaviors

  • celebrating important gains and achievements

  • feeling empowered to make healthy choices

  • support with structure, activities, exercise, nutrition, socializing, and sleep hygiene

  • maintaining hope and staying positive during the recovery process

  • help with learning to be present, tolerate discomfort, and live in the present moment

  • create a practice of awareness, acceptance, gratitude, self-compassion, and change

What is post-rehab aftercare?

Aftercare refers to the additional support and structure that is given following release from the residential part of the program. Immediately upon release, aftercare may require a period of extra support such as several times weekly counseling sessions to reinforce new skills, support groups such as AA and other addiction groups, and sessions to support family members. As a holistically oriented psychotherapist, I can work with you if you are interested in nutrition, herbs, and supplements that can reduce increase neurotransmitter production, and reduce cravings.
